Looking back on posts that I’ve published around this time of year, I’m reminded of two things. First, I’m often scrambling to get my garden together, and blogging becomes an afterthought. Second, gardening grounds me in a way that nothing else does. When others mention to me that they need to “touch grass” in order to do the same, I realize that barely a day goes by where I don’t do something that reminds me of the magnificence of the world around me. In winter, for instance, I count the species of birds I see every day to keep me connected to nature. What others might view as an obsessive compulsion, I view as an act of self-care.
Like astrology, these habits make me feel as if I’m part of something bigger than me, and they allow me to put my petty problems into perspective. In my natal chart, I have Mercury in Sagittarius in the third house in mutual reception to Jupiter in Gemini in the ninth house. While I often declare what a “third house” character I am because that is where my Capricorn sun resides, I rarely discuss my connection to the ninth house. Nevertheless, it’s profound, and I can appreciate that this time of year when the swift moving planets transit that part of my chart. I start to see “the big picture” more clearly, and worry less about the minutiae that keeps me from enjoying everything around me.
I sometimes complain when too many planets gang up in this part of my chart, but I’m starting to realize that I don’t do well when that happens anywhere in my chart.
Anyway, I’m feeling happy and content in my own little world today, and I’m feeling connected to the larger world around me in a way that I typically do this time of year. It’s nice, and I wouldn’t give it up for anything.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some grass to touch and some birds to count . . .
