May 11 is Estelle’s birthday.
Estelle Lefébure is the forgotten supermodel of the supermodel era. She was a huge star in her native France because she married another huge star in France, singer David Hallyday. However, on this side of the Atlantic, she was best-known for hogging the covers of all the major fashion magazines for a brief time in the late eighties and early nineties.
Just a couple months younger than Cindy Crawford, Estelle should have been all over the runways. I remember that she wasn’t the greatest walker, though, and that was apparent when she was cast alongside Linda Evangelista, Tyra Banks, Eva Herzigova, Nadja Auermann and the incomparable Emma Sjöberg in the video for George Michael’s “Too Funky.” Her appearance paled in comparison to the high-camp performances of her cast mates.
Yet Estelle was the cover queen, racking up high-profile credentials in a manner comparable to the career of Paulina Porizkova. The only thing that held her back from becoming household name was her reluctance to become a global superstar. She was happy to be the prettiest girl in France.
It’s not such a surprise to learn that she is a Taurus, or that she shares her birthday with that other famous French model, Laetitia Casta. Sure, there a plenty of Taurus natives out there who are publicity whores, but they are the exception to the rule. That’s one of the reasons that I like them so much.
