October 17 is Rita Hayworth’s birthday.
In my new book, I discuss Rita Hayworth in the celebrity profiles. I have always put the actress up on a pedestal: when I am asked to provide an example of iconic Libra style, she is usually the first person to pop into my mind.
But an interesting thing happened to me in between writing “Cosmically Chic” and writing “Star Stuck Style.” In the age of the internet, it’s a lot easier to look up photos of the stars I worship. When I studied those pictures of Rita Hayworth, I soon discovered how asymmetrical her face is.
I suppose that she knew it, too. She became a master of “cheating the camera” to ensure that her flaws were not perceived by her fans. The deep side-part she wore in her hair was utilized in a similar manner: she introduced asymmetry to her look to draw attention away from her imperfections. Libra is the sign of balance, after all.
I have Libra as my rising sign, and I barely ever let anyone photograph me dead-on because my one earlobe sticks out a little more than the other. I’m probably the only person in the world who knows this, but that’s just the way my mind works. I almost always tilt my head to a 3/4 profile when there’s a camera in my face. I didn’t even know I was doing it. Again, the age of the internet and the omnipresence of photos has changed my perspective.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to call my plastic surgeon.
