Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a huge fan of competitive reality shows, and that “Survivor” is my all-time favorite. While I’m not completely obsessed with the show, I don’t believe I’ve ever missed an episode.
I’ve even written about “Survivor.” Back in the day when people still read newspapers, I was interviewed by a couple of publications that had me compile lists of the former contestants’ zodiac signs while attempting to predict the outcome of future seasons. It was a lot of fun! I don’t recall if I ever picked a winner using astrology, but very early in the show’s run I pointed out that contestants who were born under three of the four cardinal signs — Aries, Cancer and Capricorn — seemed to last longer in the game.
Anyway, it’s been years since I’ve studied the zodiac signs of a “Survivor” cast, but now that “Winners at War” has premiered, I decided that there is no time like the present to have another look at the astrological makeup of the current cast.
Here’s a list of the cast of Season 40, with zodiac signs derived from the birth dates noted on Survivor Wiki:
Ethan Zohn: Scorpio
Sandra Diaz-Twine: Leo
Amber Brkich-Mariano: Leo
Danni Boatwright: Cancer
Yul Kwon: Aquarius
Parvati Shallow: Virgo
Rob Mariano: Capricorn
Sophie Clarke: Cancer
Kim Spradlin-Wolfe: Aquarius
Denise Stapley: Capricorn
Tyson Apostol: Gemini
Tony Vlachos: Virgo
Natalie Anderson: Aries
Jeremy Collins: Aries
Michelle Fitzgerald: Taurus
Adam Klein: Capricorn
Sarah Lacina: Cancer
Ben Driebergen: Capricorn
Wendell Holland: Pisces
Nick Wilson: Gemini
Four Capricorns made the cut! And that doesn’t even include Tina Wesson, Tom Westman or John Cochran.
What really stands out to me is that the two signs not included in the current cast are Libra and Sagittarius. Only one Sagittarius, Vecepia Towery, has ever won the show, and only two Libra natives, Aras Baskauskas and Chris Underwood, have won. With forty seasons behind us, every sign should have at least three wins by now. Libra and Sagittarius are seriously underperforming.
Anyway, the odds are that a Capricorn will win again simply because there are more of them playing. Capricorns are also known as the zodiac’s “comeback kids,” so it wouldn’t surprise me to see someone targeted in the first episode (like Denise or Adam) make it all the way to the end. What’s more, I wouldn’t be surprised if a Cancer native earns the title because they are inclined to play a defensive, unsentimental game while still building relationships with their fellow contestants — something that will be rewarded in a group like this where people truly understand that it is a game.
I should really try to pick a winner, but while I was watching the cast introductions on last week’s premiere night, I blurted out “I like Natalie!” We all know how well that went. Still, I’ll go out on a limb and pick Denise. I don’t believe that she’s viewed as a strategic threat, and that might be the ticket to the finale in a group of people who are already getting ahead of themselves with their strategies. Without fully understanding how the currency will affect the outcome of the show, a lot of the best-laid plans are going to be snuffed out like so many torches at Tribal Council.
Now that I’ve put that out into the universe, she’s probably going to be the next one to go . . .
