August 4 is Anna Sui’s birthday.

The article that accompanies the photo I posted above is called “Anna Sui, America’s Most Underrated Fashion Designer.” Of course, it was written by Tim Blanks: Anna Sui’s number-one fan. What you might not know is that I’m her number-two fan. I lavish praise upon her in both “Cosmically Chic” and “Star Struck Style” because I also believe that she is one of the most original, distinctive voices in fashion, speaking to her audience in a language that is all their own. I discuss her in the Gemini chapters of both books, alongside my discussion of Karl Lagerfeld’s work for Chanel.

She’s not a Gemini, though. She’s a Leo through and through with the sun, Mercury, Venus and Pluto all in the sign. In fact, she has no Gemini planets. So, why do I get Gemini vibes from her work? Because she seems to work free from the constraints that tie down most designers. She does her own thing, regardless of the prevailing trends. That’s why I compare her to Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. He always did his own thing at the label. He wasn’t a Gemini either, but there was something very Mercurial about him.

That’s why I believe that Anna Sui probably has a Gemini rising. That would not only make sense considering her creative output, but it would also place her Leo stellium in the third house. All those planets in the sector of her chart ruled by Gemini would explain everything that I’ve ever written about the designer.

Without a time of birth, I’m just going to go ahead and believe that I’m right even though I have nothing more than my opinion to back up my beliefs.

Now who sounds like a Leo with a Gemini rising?
