April 13 is Birgit Kos’ birthday.
I often find myself on the website “Famous Birthdays” looking for people to profile on this blog. Just as often, I find myself complaining about the site because it is (A) regularly inaccurate and (B) terribly organized.
For instance, today is the birthday of Birgit Kos. Anyone in the fashion business knows who Birgit Kos is because she has been everywhere for the past few years. A simple search of her name on models.com immediately brings up her profile in the category “Top 50 Models.” And yet her name is the eleventh name listed under the model category on “Famous Birthdays,” following ten women whose names I don’t even recognize. In fact, the so-called “model” residing in the number-one position on “Famous Birthdays” doesn’t even have a profile on models.com.
Now I’m sure that she’s a terrific gal. I Googled her name and discovered plenty of nice photos of her. Still, it appears that her finest work has been for third-rate catalogue brands and photographers who want to collaborate with her in order to further their own careers. That, in a nutshell, is what modeling has become in the age of Instagram. Sure, she has 766K followers, but she also is too short to be a model and not pretty enough to have a bare-faced Polaroid on her comp card. That doesn’t make her a model in my world. Morphe Cosmetics: you can have her and her spackled-on brand of beauty.
Anyway, Birgit Kos is the real deal. Her recent commercial for Tom Ford Soleil is worth a billion stupid Instagram followers in my opinion. Seeing her name appearing so low on the “Famous Birthdays” rankings makes me believe that I should start my own database of “famous birthdays” so that when people go looking for profiles of real models and other fashion personalities, they don’t have to go too far.
Oh wait — I already have. You’re visiting that site right now . . .
