There is something bracing about being around a Gemini native. They have this what-you-see-is-what-you-get quality that slaps you across the face with the sting of cheap aftershave. Speaking of things that gag me (in the old-fashioned sense of the word), Donald Trump is a Gemini. During the election, many people found his rousing candor to be refreshing. After a while, though, it started to become suffocating — again, like cheap aftershave.
There are plenty of Gemini individuals out there who can make me gag (in the “Drag Race” sense of the word) without sucking all the air out of the room. Raja, the winner of Season Three of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is one of those Geminis. I was already a big fan of Sutan Amrull because he was the makeup artist on “America’s Next Top Model” in its glory days. And when he walked into the workroom on “Drag Race” with that eyeball hat on his head, I was sold.
Raja isn’t the only Gemini who has taken the crown. Violet Chachki is also a Gemini. It’s interesting that she also made a lasting first-impression in the premiere episode of Season 7 in an outfit I can’t forget: the convertible jumpsuit she wore during the runway presentation. I don’t really think of Gemini as the “first-impression” sign, but maybe that’s something I need to reconsider.
Anyway, I digress! Geminis are the communicators of the zodiac. It’s no surprise that Raja has landed one of the best post-show gigs of any of the queens. “Fashion Photo RuView” is the only “Drag Race” recap that I am as eager to see as the show itself. Watching Raven and Raja trading insults always makes laugh. Raven is such a bitch!
I don’t really know that much about Raja personally, but I do know that there are many people in the periphery of the fashion business with Gemini sun signs. Pat McGrath, the best makeup artist in the world, is a Gemini. Both Stephen Jones and Philip Treacy have Gemini sun signs. In my soon-to-be-published book, I call Gemini the “accessory sign” because there is something sort of throwaway about the sort of fashion that they create. But fashion is a superficial business that thrives upon the notion that we will all grow weary of whatever it is we are wearing if given enough time.
Perhaps that is the reason that Raja has so many looks. When I get around to discussing the Cancer queens (there are plenty of them), the biggest difference between them and the Gemini queens is that they have a much more homogeneous look, as if they were all cut from the same cloth. You don’t see that with Gemini natives, and you don’t even see it in Gemini individuals. There is very little consistency between them. What connects them is their desire to do their own thing, and their inability to define what their own thing is from one moment to the next. It is an understatement to say that they are inconsistent.
But they do make great reality TV show characters! It’s too bad that “RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars” only invites the losers back for a second chance because I would love to see Raja compete again. Wouldn’t it be great to see a Raja/Raven final two with Raven losing again in the finale?
I can dream, can’t I?
