I just can’t get excited about fashion lately. It’s not that I’ve deserted it entirely, but that I’m just really, really, really tired of what the fashion industry is trying to sell to women lately. If I was a young woman in 2024, I’d be giving a middle finger to fashion altogether.

I’d be thrilled to say that I’m not the only one who feels this way, but I’m just not seeing society there just yet. But it’s going to happen soon. Counterculture hasn’t been the prevailing influence for a long time now. Yet there is some “burn it all down” energy in the air, especially as governments around the world endeavor to limit women’s rights. I just hope that the kids are paying attention to what’s going on.

Anyway, the middle of the 1990s saw a counterculture trend that manifested itself as the Grunge movement. During that time, Saturn moved through Pisces — where it is right now. The Pisces/Aries cusp is where I see new generations born. Saturn moved into Aries in 1996 and marked the distinction between Millennials and Gen Z. Generation X began around the time that Saturn moved into Aries in 1966. That was the time of the British Youthquake and Haight-Ashbury. Major cultural changes occur as Saturn vacillates between these two signs.

That’s quite a simplification, but it’s difficult to pinpoint any more important cultural shifts in fashion during my lifetime, except for punk (which coincidentally corresponds to the end of Generation X in 1977). Curiously, the next generation is going to be called Generation Beta. Kids born in 2025 will belong to that category. They’ll also be born in a year when the sun moves from Pisces to Aries and back again.

I hope that I’m right about an impending cultural shift because I would be thrilled to see a major change. I’d be happy to see the most-influential women in pop culture looking more like Johnette Napolitano wearing whatever she wanted to wear than like Zendaya wearing whatever her stylist tells her to wear.

It’s time for a change . . .
