May 2 is Donatella Versace’s birthday.

I like Donatella Versace. I’ve been tooting her horn ever since she took the reins at Versace because she turned a brand that was in a steep decline into something special. People often romanticize the history of the house and forget that the brand had lost its luster in the mid-nineties because Gianni Versace had failed to adapt to the contemporary fashion climate. His death in 1997 was tragic, but I can honestly say that I don’t believe the Versace label would have survived without the big changes made to the brand shortly after Donatella took over. By early 2000, Versace was the name on everyone’s lips.
