Venus Flytrap (source: Popular Science)

I’m always amazed by how much I don’t know about things. For instance, until just a moment ago, it never occurred to me that the Venus flytrap had anything to do with Venus. As far as I can tell, the plant was given its name because someone believed that it resembled a certain part of the body that only women have. Hence, the Venusian name, like the Gillette razor for women. Tacking “Venus” onto something makes it feminine, I suppose.

I don’t always know everything about astrology, either, and I don’t pretend that I do. In fact, I often admit that I’ve forgotten more about astrology than most people who call themselves astrologers have actually learned. Two minutes following other so-called astrologers on Twitter will confirm that fact.

But I digress! Something that I’ve never really looked up before is the difference between the superior and inferior conjunctions of Venus. I know that they occur. I know why they occur. I just haven’t spent any time trying to figure out how they would affect me if they were to become personalized through transits to my natal planets. At this very moment, Venus is making its inferior conjunction to the sun while forming a trine with my natal moon almost exactly. It should be a big deal, even if it’s a short-lived aspect. Venus is the ruler of my Libra ascendant, after all.

I guess that I feel good this morning. I feel emotionally well-balanced and I’m not obsessing over things that I can’t control. My body feels good. I’m eager to go to work where I enjoy spending time with my coworkers. I’m also eager to wear something nice that I haven’t worn for a while. I feel renewed, to be honest. If the inferior conjunction of Venus represents a new cycle (as some sources maintain, including Cafe Astrology), I believe that I’m beginning to understand it better by understanding how it affects me.

It’s pleasant. There really is no sense of urgency in the air to make my mood feel anything but pleasant, nor is the menacing specter of American politics bugging me as much as it usually does because I simply decided to get off of the social media sites that bug me.

For me, that’s Venus in a nutshell. In my first book, I describe the planet as a favorite aunt who just wants everything to be nice. I know a lot of astrologers like to get in deep with Venus, relating everything about the planet to both feminine energy and feminine sexuality, but I don’t get that with Venus. To me, the darker, more primal parts of female sexuality have more to do with the moon than with Venus. Venus is the planet of superficial pleasantries as far as I’m concerned. It’s the Venus flytrap in the pretty photo I posted above; not the carnivorous plant that someone named the Venus flytrap because it reminded them of the “vagina dentata” of folklore.

So I’m going to take this conjunction at face value and learn from the way that I’m feeling right this very minute while the aspect is almost exact. With this superficial planet involved ā€” the most superficial planet in my not-so-humble opinion ā€” I don’t believe that I’m doing anything wrong. Maybe I’ll learn something in the future that will change my mind, or maybe I won’t. In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy this cosmic blessing while it lasts.
