Ripening (source: pexels.com)

I was just thinking about the word “August,” and I discovered that it was once used as a verb. The Google AI summary offered this breakdown of the word’s etymology:

“The verb form of ‘august’ is rare and largely considered obsolete. ‘The Oxford English Dictionary’ notes that it was used in the 1850s with meanings related to ripening or bringing to fruition.”

I suppose that makes sense since many of the flowering plants in this part of the world are currently setting fruit that is in the process of ripening. As I sit here at my computer, I can see rose hips, crabapples, chokecherries and mountain ash berries just outside my windows taking on a little more color every day.

Anyway, I’m going to take that obsolete definition of the word as a metaphor about my own journey this August. I need to take a step back and just allow nature to take its course. Mars enters my twelfth house this morning where it will transit for the entire month. While I am not making enough money to do all the decadent things that I like to do, I still have five paydays this month, so I’ll be fine. I might feel panicked and paranoid about my prospects with Mars in the house of my horoscope where those feelings can take on a life of their own, but I have several other planets supporting my growth at the moment.

For the last few months I’ve published post after post where I declare that this autumn will be my time to embark upon a new career path. I just need to keep believing that the universe has plans for me. In the meantime, I can just tend to my needs like I tend to my garden.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go august myself a little more before it’s too late. This summer isn’t going last forever . . .
