The Year of the Snake arrived this morning alongside the new moon in Aquarius.

Officially, the Chinese New Year begins when the sun reaches 315° along the tropical zodiac, which is on or around February 4. Today’s celebration is symbolic: in both Western and Eastern astrological traditions, the new moon represents a time of new beginnings.

This is a significant year for me because I am a Wood Snake, which means that I will be celebrating my sixtieth birthday during this cycle. For that reason, I did what any normal person would do: I bought a shirt that is festooned with snakes. It’s supposed to be delivered sometime today. Maybe I’ll post of photo of it when it arrives.

In the Chinese tradition, Snakes contain fire. Fire is my lucky element in Chinese astrology, so that’s a good thing. I could use some good luck. To be honest, I set a few things into motion last week that could potentially change my life. I feel as if I need a fresh start. Today is a good day to declare that intention to the universe.

Monday is when the actual Year of the Snake arrives where I live. I’ve got the week off from work and I’m meeting some friends for breakfast that morning at a casino near my house. I might try pushing my luck, but I don’t believe that’s a wise idea. Snakes are supposed to be cautious, so I should probably just slither my way back home. I’d like to start the year on the right foot, but snakes don’t even have feet. I’m not sure how that will work.

Anyway, I’m optimistic to see what this new cycle will bring. During the last Snake year, I was in a pretty good place. I had just started a new job and I was making a lot of money. I felt genuinely hopeful for my future, and I would like to feel that way again.

I guess I’ll find out soon enough . . .
