I’ve been blogging with WordPress for several years now. Recently, some changes to the platform include the ability to use AI to assist users in writing blog posts. Now I’m getting regular warnings that I use “complex words.”
Is that going to make me change the way I write? No, not at all. I don’t often use a thesaurus and I rarely misspell a word. I occasionally miss entire words and don’t notice until the next day when I reread what I’ve posted (my mind works pretty fast and it sometimes fills in the blanks for me). However, I love my so-called “writer’s voice.” It’s a little snobby and condescending, but so am I. Why would I try to dumb it down by choosing words that are considered to be less complex by a computer program that is basically in its infancy? I wouldn’t be using those words if they weren’t the right words to describe exactly what I mean.
So, instead of changing my modus operandi, I’m going to encourage everyone else to pick up a fucking dictionary every now and then. What’s the worst thing that could happen? Could someone actually go out of their way to learn something while reading my blog? Isn’t that why they visit it in the first place?
Now if you’ll excuse me, the sun is my tenth house and I’ve got better things to do than complaining about the intellectually uncurious . . .
