Just a moment ago, I was looking at today’s celebrity birthdays when I noticed that Iris Strubegger was born this day. Anyone who follows fashion should know that Iris has been a model in the big leagues for more than fifteen years now. The photo I posted above is from a recent editorial. At the ripe old age of thirty-five, she looks gorgeous.
Anyway, Iris is listed as #15 in the category of “Models Born July 21” on famousbirthdays.com. Ahead of her, there are a couple of notable models, including Sara Sampaio and former beauty queen Ali Landry. I have never heard of the other twelve individuals. A few are probably famous in other parts of the world, so I understand why I wouldn’t know who they are. A few more, however, are Instagram stars, and that’s why I have never heard of them.
But do I want to know who they are? No! No I don’t!
Just yesterday, I was scrolling through some Instagram stories and I said to myself “Is this what passes for entertainment nowadays? Is this supposed to be art? I don’t get it!” And you know what? I was fine with that.
I’m perfectly content to live in a world where I don’t reward fame for the sake of fame. At first, I wanted to attribute my contempt for the Instagram generation to my advanced age, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this is probably just a Capricorn thing. We can be grouchy, old relics, sitting back in our armchairs and telling the rest of you what’s wrong with the world. However, we can also be old when we’re young and young when we’re old: we tend to become less-serious with the passage of time. That got me wondering if I will ever come around to appreciating this current generation of “internet famous” kids and other social media stars.
If that ever happens, I’ll let you know. For now, though, I’ll take Iris Strubegger over a dog-faced fame whore like Erika Costell (the #1 “Model” on famousbirthdays.com) any day of the week. We Capricorns are also the discerning type . . .
